Learning About the Power of Voice from the Story of Barbara Jordan

Jamila Felton, librarian at St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School in Washington, D.C., read What Do You Do with a Voice Like That?: The Story of Extraordinary Congresswoman Barbara Jordan to her kindergarten classes for Black Lives Matter Week at School of Action.

After Ms. Felton read the book, students talked about how Barbara Jordan used her voice powerfully to help people. A student stated that she used her voice to fight for justice for other people and that she was a teacher that taught her students important stuff.

The previous week, students read Martin & Mahalia: His Words, Her Song.

One child asked what Black Lives Matter meant. Ms. Felton explained it “was about justice, equality and the affirmation of black lives in the United States and all over the world.”
