Freedom Was in Sight: Exploring Reconstruction in the Washington, D.C. Region (Educator Professional Learning)

  • National Museum of African American History and Culture 1400 Constitution Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20560 United States (map)

Join the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture for a deep dive into the era of Reconstruction in the Washington, D.C. region.

Using the new graphic history, Freedom Was in Sight! A Graphic History of Reconstruction in the Washington D.C. Region, participants will take an in-depth look at how African Americans sought to build lives for themselves, their families and their communities. In addition to content and discussion sessions, participants will explore historic sites in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and meet with curators, historians and other experts on Reconstruction.

This seminar investigates Reconstruction through a local lens while drawing connections to the national story of the years following the Civil War and the end of slavery. Throughout the week, sessions will demonstrate effective history teaching strategies and activities designed to meet teachers' personal and professional enrichment needs.

In addition to a short survey, applicants are required to share a statement of purpose explaining why they would like to attend the seminar.

The workshop runs from Monday, July 7 to Friday, July 11, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, with a registration fee of $200. Deadline to register is June 20th.
